WELCOME TO OUR HOME PAGE!
Welcome to the website of the Department of Mathematics at the University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA). The University is located in Edinburg, TX, which is part of the Rio Grande Valley, in the southern tip of Texas.
The department has 35 tenured and tenure-track faculty members in pure and applied mathematics and in mathematics education and conduct research in various areas such as partial differential equations, optimization, or K-12 research, to name a few. Our faculty members have received grants from funding agencies, such as, the Department of Defense, National Science Foundation, Eisenhower grants, and the university. The department also has about 15 lecturers who mainly teach college algebra classes, trigonometry, or precalculus and some are active in research.
The department has a Master's graduate program and we are working hard toward obtaining Ph.D. programs in Applied Mathematics and in Mathematics Education. As a result, much activity is occurring in research and in grant writing. We are also seeking to establish interdisciplinary collaborations with researchers in various disciplines, such as engineering, physics, and biology.
The department has about 120 students majoring in mathematics. Many of our students have become K-12 teachers, faculty at community colleges, or have attended graduate school. We take pride in our students and strive to make their undergraduate career a memorable and enlightening experience.
The Department of Mathematics is located in the Mathematics and General Classroom (MAGC) building. Facilities in the building include: two mathematics studio classrooms which house about 70 Sun workstations, and a PC laboratory. The laboratories are used extensively by faculty for teaching purposes and by students who use the laboratories to conduct experiments for coursework or to explore ideas.
